Opportunity House, Inc. is a not-for-profit,
community sponsored organization providing
rehabilitative services to people with disabilities.
Our primary service area is DeKalb County.

OH History

1957

DeKalb County Association for the Mentally Retarded [DCAMR] was founded.

1962

DCAMR begins a sheltered workshop at the old South School in Sycamore and receives a grant from the Department of Mental Health to fund it.

1963

Opportunity House, Inc. is incorporated with its own Board separate from DCAMR.

1967

A residential living program begins.  Two homes are purchased, one for men the other for women.  The workshop moves from the old South School to the present location, 202 Lucas St.

1969

The Department of Mental Health begins funding the two homes as Community Living Facilities.

1970

Leisure Time Activity Services [now Recreation] begins.

1971

Work Activity Services begin.  A large home is purchased at 309 California St. in Sycamore and the two existing homes are combined into one Community Living facility.

1972

Purchased the building housing our workshop, 202 Lucas St.

1976

Put an addition on to the workshop due to growth of the program.

1978

Received our first Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities [CARF] accreditation.

1979

Began the Prevocational Services [now Developmental Training] program.  The program began operations at the United Methodist Church in Sycamore.

1982

Purchased land and built a facility at 520 Maple St.  Moved the Prevocational Services program from United Methodist Church.

1985

Incorporated O.H. Residences Inc. to be the owner of a new home [Community Living Facility] to be built with a H.U.D. construction loan.

1986

Added on to our main facility at 202 Lucas St. to accommodate growth.

1989

The Community Integrated Living Arrangements [CILA] program for 8 residents begins.  Recognized by the state as one of the top 10 Supported Employment programs in Illinois.  Began construction of the H.U.D. financed home [Community Living Facility] on Maple St. in Sycamore.

1993

Purchased a duplex on Alden Place in DeKalb and moved 8 residents in.

1994

Purchased a home on Rich Road in DeKalb and moved 6 residents in.

1995

Special Olympics begins with a basketball team coached by volunteers.

1998

Began operating the Leonard St. home, owned by the sister of one of the 3 residents placed there.

2000

Began operating the Canterbury Place Apartments Home - two conjoined apartment units on Meadowcreek Dr. in DeKalb.

2001

Closed the Leonard St home and moved residents to our Rich Road and Alden Place Homes.

2003

Moved the Developmental Training program to a larger, leased, facility in DeKalb.

2004

Purchased a lot for a future accessible home on Maplewood Dr. in Sycamore.

2005

Purchased the Manor Drive Home on Manor Dr. in DeKalb and moved residents in.

2006

Constructed an accessible home on Maplewood Dr. in Sycamore and moved residents in.  John Kroos, Executive Director for 36 years retires.

2007

Purchased the old Duplex Building at 350 N. California St. in Sycamore and began the remodeling needed to convert the old industrial site into a modern, accessible facility to meet the needs of the growth in the Developmental Training program.

2009

Purchased a home at on Linden Place in DeKalb, remodeled to comply with licensing requirements and moved 5 residents in

2010

Added on to the 16 bed Community Living Facility, giving residents there much needed living space.
