The “Building a Better Future” project is designed to place Opportunity House in a better position to respond to growing future demand for services in DeKalb County. By consolidating two buildings into one larger facility, there will be significant savings in operations costs, as well as room for future expansion of programs. Construction is underway and we are excited for this new chapter in the life of Opportunity House.
State funding of programs for adults with developmental disabilities has declined over the past several years, yet demand for services for area students leaving Special Education programs and for people with Autism has increased. As a proactive response to this challenge, the consolidation project is estimated to show an annual savings of $91,424 from decreased utility use, building maintenance, grounds keeping, insurance etc. Plus, the sale of our Lucas Street facility, once the consolidation is completed, will help offset the lack of funding for programming infrastructure needed to expand capacity.
Sycamore School District 428 and other Special Education Transition programs will continue to operate from the remodeled facility, maintaining a partnership that facilitates the smooth transition of special needs students from the educational system to adult services.
We are counting on community support to accomplish this objective, and are currently a little over $50,000 away from our goal of $1.8 million. If you would like to help, you can click here to make a tax-deductible donation online, or send a donation to Opportunity House indicating that it is designated for the Building a Better Future project. Your donation will also receive a $1 match for every $2 donated, thanks to the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation, giving your gift an even greater impact.
